Species Status & Landscape Mandate

The Northern River Terrapin (Batagur baska) is a critically endangered estuarine chelonian native to the tidal mangroves and river systems of the Bay of Bengal. Driven to functional extinction in the wild by historical over-exploitation, egg harvesting, and habitat degradation, its last remaining habitat in India is confined to the mangrove wilderness of the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. Since 2008, Wildlife Survival Alliance Foundation India, in partnership with the West Bengal Forest Department (WBFD), has spearheaded a dedicated conservation breeding and species recovery initiative to reverse this decline and orchestrate the species' wild restoration.

World’s Largest Conservation Breeding Colony

Starting with just 12 wild founder individuals acquired in 2008, WSAFI provided core technical expertise in specialized husbandry, artificial incubation, and facility design to establish a bio-secure propagation program within the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. Today, this initiative manages the world’s largest captive population of Northern River Terrapins, comprising over 400 individuals across adult, juvenile, and hatchling cohorts. This flourishing genetic reserve serves as the global benchmark for Batagur baska ex-situ management and the primary source for wild reintroduction.

Monitored Rewilding & Cultural Integration

Marking a landmark transition from captive propagation to wild restoration, WSAFI and the West Bengal Forest Department executed India’s first-ever monitored rewilding releases of Batagur baska into the Sundarbans National Park. Reintroduced individuals are fitted with tracking transmitters to gather spatial telemetry data on movement patterns, estuarine habitat selection, and post-release survival rates. To ensure community protection in an intensely fished ecosystem, releases are combined with regional traditions—receiving ceremonial blessings at the temple of Bonbibi, the forest deity of the Sundarbans—linking species recovery directly to local cultural heritage.

Community Stewardship & Grassroots Monitoring

To protect released terrapins from accidental fishing gear entanglement and poaching, WSAFI maintains active community outreach across fringe mangrove villages. Partnering with Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs), local fisherfolk, and Village Resource Persons, WSAFI conducts targeted awareness drives detailing species identification, threat mitigation, and reporting protocols. By establishing a grassroots monitoring network among riverine communities and local youth, WSAFI ensures real-time reporting of tagged terrapins and fosters long-term community-led stewardship across the Sundarban landscape.
